Requirements

Requirements & important information

Prerequisites

  • Minimum certification required: None — this is an entry-level course; no prior diving experience is needed.
  • Minimum age: 10 years old. Divers aged 10–14 are certified as Junior Open Water Diver, with depth limits and a requirement to dive with a certified adult; full certification without junior restrictions applies from age 15.
  • Participants must be able to swim 200 meters without swimming aids (or 300 meters using mask, fins, and snorkel) and float or tread water for 10 minutes.

Health & Fitness to Dive

  • Diving is a physically demanding activity. Participants must be in good general physical health and fit to dive.
  • All participants must complete and sign the SSI Medical Statement (Diver Medical Questionnaire) prior to the start of the course.
  • If the participant answers “yes” to any question on the medical statement, written medical clearance from a physician (preferably one familiar with dive medicine) is required before participation. This must be provided prior to arrival.
  • We recommend disclosing any relevant medical history in advance, including cardiac conditions, ear/sinus problems, recent surgery, medication use, or pregnancy.

Liability & Insurance

  • A signed liability release and assumption-of-risk form is required from all participants prior to any in-water activity.
  • Participants are strongly advised to hold valid dive accident and travel insurance covering the training activities and depth range of this program.

Practical Notes

  • The program includes 4 open water training dives to a maximum depth of 18 meters.
  • Participants under 18 years old will need a parent or guardian to review and sign the required SSI training and medical forms.
  • If a participant does not meet the certification, age, or medical clearance requirements above, the agency reserves the right to deny participation in the certification activities without a refund of the certification/diving portion of the package.

Theory

How you learn

Theoretical Training & Online Learning

The theoretical component of the SSI Open Water Diver program will be completed online through the SSI e-learning platform, allowing participants to study the course material at their own pace prior to and during the course.

The diving center will also provide online webinars with professional SSI instructors, offering participants the opportunity to review the course material, ask questions, clarify concepts, and prepare for the practical training.

In addition to the online theoretical training, a theoretical briefing and debriefing will be conducted before and after each dive. The relevant theoretical concepts, procedures, safety considerations, and practical skills will therefore be reviewed and reinforced throughout the diving program, immediately before each practical session.

This combination of e-learning, instructor-led webinars, and continuous pre-dive briefings and post-dive debriefings ensures that the theoretical knowledge is continuously reinforced and directly connected to the practical diving experience.

Optional In-Person Theoretical Training

Participants who prefer to complete the theoretical training in person at our diving center may request an additional classroom-based theoretical session.

The cost for this optional service is €100 per person.

This service is optional and must be requested and arranged in advance.
